Final Fantasy XIV Mobile in Development by Square Enix and Tencent
Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise have reason to be excited. Reports indicate that a mobile version of the popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, is currently in development through a collaboration between Square Enix and Tencent Games.
According to a leak from the well-known insider Kurakasis, Square Enix and Tencent are working together on this ambitious project. This development continues the strategic partnership that began in 2018 when the two companies signed a letter of intent to enhance Square Enix's content services globally.
The Potential Revival of the Franchise on Mobile
The groundwork for this project may have been laid as early as 2021. At that time, Yosuke Matsuda, then President of Square Enix, confirmed that several joint projects were underway with Tencent, although no official announcements were made.
For those unfamiliar, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) was first released in 2010. It underwent a complete overhaul and was re-released in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The game blends traditional MMORPG mechanics with elements unique to the Final Fantasy series. Players earn experience points by defeating monsters, crafting items, and completing quests, which in turn level up their characters and unlock new abilities.
Currently, these developments are based on rumors. An official announcement would be highly anticipated, but it seems we may have to wait a while longer. While it is confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is in development, the extent of its progress remains unknown. Given Square Enix's mixed success with mobile adaptations of the franchise, such as the decent Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis and the recently shut down Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, this project could be pivotal in reviving the series on mobile platforms.
