Stormgate Set to Launch on Steam in Summer 2024, Reviving Classic RTS Elements

Stormgate is poised to redefine the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, amalgamating the essence of iconic games like StarCraft, Warcraft, and Command & Conquer. Developed by Frost Giant Studios, a team comprising veterans from these legendary titles, Stormgate is scheduled for early access on Steam this summer. This free-to-play RTS promises a nostalgic yet innovative experience for strategy enthusiasts.

Set on a post-post-apocalyptic Earth, the game features factions like the human Vanguard, reminiscent of StarCraft's Terrans, defending against the Zerg-like Infernal Host. The gameplay, while retaining familiarity for StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3 veterans, introduces fresh mechanics and streamlined unit management reminiscent of Command & Conquer. Its user interface and combat dynamics have evolved from its predecessors, simplifying the micromanagement and focusing on strategic depth in combat and construction.

In its closed beta, which included both three-player co-op mode and single-player options, Stormgate demonstrated a strong commitment to co-operative gameplay, a feature that gained immense popularity in StarCraft 2. The technology underpinning the game, SnowPlay, supports massive matches with over a thousand units in action, promising an unprecedented scale in RTS battles.

Frost Giant plans to fund the game through the sale of new campaign chapters, heroes, and similar content, keeping the core game free-to-play. While the map editor, a key tool used in building Stormgate, is set to be released post-launch, it wasn’t available during the beta testing phase.

The two factions currently available offer unique playstyles. The human Vanguard combines elements of SC2’s Terrans and WC3’s Orcs, while the Infernal Host introduces novel strategies, like unit sacrifice for power boosts. The game’s balance, however, is still under refinement. The current gameplay allows for creating massive unit groups, but this could overshadow the tactical nuance similar to Warcraft 3’s smaller skirmishes.

Stormgate is not just a nod to its RTS roots but a significant step forward. Its technological advancements include a 64Hz tick rate and rollback technology, reducing lag and enhancing gameplay fluidity. These features were evident in the smooth gaming experience during the beta, despite geographical distances among players.

As Stormgate continues its development journey, it holds the promise of combining the strategic depth of Warcraft 3 with the exhilarating pace of StarCraft 2. With an upcoming $10,000 EGCtv invitational in February, the game is already making strides in the esports scene, signaling a bright future for this next-gen RTS. Stormgate is not just a homage to the classics; it's an evolution, setting a new benchmark for future RTS games.
