SunderBound Launches Steam Demo With Major Gameplay Overhaul

Independent developer Kipi Interactive has launched a Steam demo for its co-op top-down shooter SunderBound, alongside a new trailer.

Based on community playtesting, the studio has overhauled the game’s core loop to shift the experience from chaotic run-and-gun combat toward more tactical, team-based co-op play.

Combat Overhaul: From Chaos to Coordination

During early development, player data showed that relentless enemy waves often overwhelmed players, leaving little time to plan tactics, restock ammunition, or support teammates. As a result, combat frequently pushed players toward repetitive kiting rather than target prioritization and coordinated team play.

Kipi Interactive has overhauled the combat system to emphasize tactical play. Weaker enemies can still ambush players, but standard enemy numbers have been reduced, while individual foes are now tougher and smarter.

Enemies hit harder but have clearer wind-up animations, making timing, cover use, and teammate communication more important. Cover and ammunition systems have also been rebalanced to support a more deliberate combat flow.

Level and Mission Structure Reworked: Inside the Shelter

Kipi Interactive has reworked key areas of SunderBound’s Shelter tower to better support its new tactical combat. Cramped pipes and corridors have been replaced with larger generator rooms, open battle spaces, and decaying maintenance tunnels, giving players more room to move, reposition, and coordinate.

Previously linear side objectives have been replaced with optional challenges woven naturally throughout each level, encouraging exploration and risk-reward decision-making.

Players can use choke points, explosive barrels, and hidden routes to gain tactical advantages, while pursuing higher-tier loot and a stronger sense of discovery.

Direct Status Synergy: Certain offensive abilities can mark targets, allowing teammates to trigger bonus damage and tactical effects.

Dynamic Positional Combos: Players can chain placeable abilities to control the battlefield, such as using Nu’s magnetized orb to group enemies before Vuk follows up with area damage or launches the device across the arena.

Flexible Ability Kits: Abilities now serve multiple roles, including initiating attacks, extending combos, and covering retreats. Vuk’s expanded kit and skill-point options let him adapt between defensive, area-damage, and mobile guerrilla roles.

The SunderBound demo is now available on Steam, offering an early look at its new tactical updates with online co-op, local shared/split-screen play, and solo play with an AI partner. Players can also wishlist the game and follow Kipi Interactive on X for updates.
